What is ISPM15?

ISPM15 stands for International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures no.15, which essentially means it’s an initiative to prevent the spread of parasites globally. This initiative was founded due to the increase in international trade flow and globalisation, which has resulted in the distribution of foreign plant and animal materials worldwide. For instance, the organisms in wood can be parasitic, which can result in plant products falling victim to diseases. Presswood pallets are ISPM15- approved, meaning consumers can rest assured that they’re minimising their negative impact on the environment.

What does the ISPM15 standard describe?

The standard describes measures that are employed by the government to restrict the importation of particular plant species. Typically, this applies to products made from raw wood; however, it doesn’t apply to timber that’s processed in a pest-free manner (e.g., presswood). Ultimately, products that adhere to the ISPM15 standard won’t contaminate plant or animal materials.

Are there exemptions in the ISPM15 standard?

Due to the low risk of the following products, they are exempt from the provisions of the ISPM15 standard:

• Timber elements permanently affixed to freight vehicles
• Wood, wool, shavings, and sawdust
• Boxes or packaging for commodities that have been manufactured in a pest-free manner
• Spirit and wine barrels that have been heated during production
• Material that has been manufactured from wood with a thickness of less than 6mm
